Farmer's Wife - Week 25

We'll be doing more Foundation Paper-piecing and a few other familiar methods for week 25 for our Farmer's Wife Quilt-along.  Our blocks this week are:
  • Block 44 - Gentleman's Fancy
  • Block 47 - Homemaker
  • Block 53 - Jackknife

Block 44 - Gentleman's Fancy

Gentleman's Fancy is a fairly simple, one template, foundation paper-pieced block.  I have provided a template here for this block.

Block 47 - Homemaker

This block is a little complicated because there are no straight lines that allow for standard piecing.  I have provided a template for the parts here.

I have broken the block into three parts:
  • the four corners that are foundation paper-pieced
  • the four green triangles
  • the center square
Start by making the four corners using the foundation paper-piecing templates.  Next, cut out the four green triangles and the center square using the templates a guides.

To assemble this block you will use inset seams where the parts meet at each corner of the center square; see image below.  Refer to week 23 when we used inset seams for Flower Garden Path, Block 36.

Start by sewing two of the green triangles to adjacent sides of the center square, being careful to not sew beyond the point where the pieces meet.  Next take one of the four corner units and sew it to the appropriate side of one of the green triangles you attached to the center square, again, stopping right where the parts meet.  Now, swivel the same corner unit to attach it to the other green triangle.

Now you should have the center square, two green triangles, and one corner unit assembled.  Sew another green triangle to the center square, stopping where the parts meet, and repeat the inset process for the second corner unit.  Repeat with the fourth green triangle and third corner unit.

Now you should have only one corner unit to inset and you are finished.

Block 53 - Jackknife

For Jackknife, there are three different small blocks within this 9-patch.
  • the corner blocks are made with foundation paper-piecing, template here.
  • the center square, cut 2 1/2 inches square.
  • the side hourglass blocks which can be made from this tutorial we've used before, making the hourglass blocks 2 inches finished, 2 1/2 inches with seam allowances.  If your hourglass blocks have two different colors, like mine, start with two white squares, one green square and one blue square.  Then, be sure to "swap" your colors mid-way through the tutorial so you are sewing together a green HST to a blue HST.  If you don't, you will end up with two blue and two green hourglass blocks.
