Block 56 - Maple Leaf
This block is a 9-patch of solid blocks, HSTs, and one easily pieced block.Farmer's Wife - Block 56 - Maple Leaf |
Start by cutting four 2 1/2 inch squares for the solid blocks, 3 green and 1 white. Next, make four 2 inch HSTs, finished, that are white and green. Start with 2 7/8 inch squares to make these HSTs using our familiar tutorial, and trim them to 2 1/2 inches.
For that last corner block, the stem of the leaf, cut a 1 inch strip for the stem (green) that is at least 3 1/2 inches long. Next, cut two white triangles from a 2 1/2 inch square (make it larger if you want some wiggle room). Now, sew the triangles to either side of the strip, being sure to honor the scant 1/4 inch seam allowance and being sure to keep the triangles even, lined up on either side of the strip. Iron the block, then trim it to 2 1/2 inches square, making sure that the strip is lined up on the center diagonal.
Now you have all nine pieces, you can assemble the block appropriately!
Block 85 - Square Dance
For this block, I recommend a feature fabric for the center. If you like embroidery, this might be a nice place to do some; or if you have a large print fabric with an interesting element that would fit there. This center block will be cut 4 1/2 inches square.Farmer's Wife - Block 85 - Square Dance |
The four corner blocks should be cut 1 1/2 inches square. Finally, the four side pieces will be made using foundation paper piecing or traditional piecing using this template.
Attach two of the side pieces to either side of the center square. Attach the small squares to each end of the other two side pieces, then sew these large units to the top and bottom of the center square.
