Farmer's Wife - Week 33

This week's Farmer's Wife blocks are all about HSTs... and a little applique.  The blocks are:

  • Block 26 - Cut Glass Dish
  • Block 27 - Darting Birds
  • Block 35 - Flower Basket

Block 26 - Cut Glass Dish

This block is made up of 24 HSTs and three larger squares.

The HSTs should be finished to 1 inch square, so start with 1 7/8 inch squares if you use the two-at-a-time method or 3 3/4 inch squares if you use the 8-at-a-time method.  Trim the HSTs to 1 1/2 inches before assembly.

The three larger squares should be cut to 2 1/2 inches.

Assemble the HSTs in groups of 4-patch blocks, then assemble the whole block like a 9-patch.

Block 27 - Darting Birds

This block requires 16 HSTs, so again, you can choose which method to use based on your fabric choice, and these are the same size as above!

In addition to the HSTs, you will need to cut the following:
  • Four white 1 1/2 inch squares
  • Four main fabric 1 1/2 inch squares (I'll make 2 blue and 2 green)
  • Four main fabric large triangles, made from two 2 7/8 inch squares cut in half diagonally (again, I'll cut 2 blue and 2 green triangles)
  • Eight small white triangles, made from four 1 7/8 inch squares cut in half diagonally

To assemble the block, you will first build each of the four identical sub-blocks.

For each block start in the upper left corner with the 1 1/2 inch non-white square and attach two of the small white triangles, then sew the larger triangle to that unit, forming a square mini-block.  Line up the HSTs along the right and bottom edge and place the small white square in the corner.  Make sure the HSTs are oriented properly!  Sew the two on the right together and sew that to the side.  Then sew the three along the bottom together and attach that to the bottom.

Repeat this for the other three sub-blocks and assemble the four together.

Block 35 - Flower Basket

For this block, start with the following pieces:
  • Cut three white squares 2 1/2 inches
  • Make two HSTs (blue and white) finished to 2 inches, so start with 2 7/8 inch squares.  Before assembly, trim the HSTs to 2 1/2 inches
  • Cut one green triangle that measures 4 7/8 inches on two sides
  • Cut one white triangle that measures 4 7/8 inches on two sides
  • Cut one red bias strip one inch wide and 7 inches long

Apply the basket handle to the large white triangle via applique; see the options I outlined when we made Block 3, Basket, in Week 12 (if you've read that page, don't worry about inserting the handle into the seam; we'll just apply it directly before we do anything else).  Use this template for placement.

Next, sew the large green triangle to the large white triangle (with the applique applied), being sure to enclose the edges of the handle in the seam. You should now have a square mini-block.

Finally, line up the remaining 5 squares along the right side and bottom of this block and assemble.

See instructions for week 32 of our Farmer's Wife Quilt-along.
