Farmer's Wife - Week 22

For week 22 of our Farmer's Wife Quilt-along, we'll be cutting and making a lot of squares, HSTs and a few rectangles.
  • Block 38 - Four Winds
  • Block 68 - Postage Stamp
  • Block 106 - Wild Rose & Square

Block 38 - Four Winds

This block has a lot of little pieces and it will be tedious, but not difficult.  It is simply a lot of squares (8) and HSTs (28).

Start by cutting 4 white and 4 yellow squares, cut to 1 1/2 inches square.  Set aside for final assembly.

The HSTs will be made in a variety of color combinations, but all should be trimmed to 1 1/2 inches square before assembly.  Start with 1 7/8 inch squares using the tutorial we probably know very well by now.  You will need the following counts:
  • 12 green and white
  • 4 yellow and white
  • 4 red and white
  • 4 green and red
  • 4 green and yellow
Carefully layout the pieces, making sure the HSTs are oriented properly.  Assemble the squares in rows, then sew the rows together.

Block 68 - Postage Stamp

This block is made of 36 squares cut 1 1/2 inches square.  You may find that strip piecing will work depending on your color selection and layout.

Block 106 - Wild Rose & Square

For this block, make the four "corner" sections first.  Each section is a four-patch of one square and three HSTs.  The square (white) should be cut 1 11/16 inches square.  The three HSTs will be made starting with 2 1/4 inch squares, then once made they should be trimmed to 1 11/16 inches square.

Once the four sections are completed, cut the center square (green) 1 11/16 inches square and the four rectangles (white) 2 7/8 inches by 1 11/16 inches.

Again, assemble the pieces in rows, then sew the rows together.
