Farmer's Wife - Week 20

For week 20 of our Farmer's Wife Quilt-along, we have three blocks that use a variety of piecing techniques we've been using.
  • Block 22 - Corn & Beans
  • Block 80 - Single Wedding Star
  • Block 98 - Waterwheel

Block 22 - Corn & Beans

I've been trying to figure out the best way to assemble this block when I came across a tutorial on the Laugh Yourself to Stitches blog that is brilliant for this block.  So, we'll use those instructions here.

Block 80 - Single Wedding Star

This block is a 9-patch with only one complicated block style.  The center is simply a solid square, cut 2 1/2 inches square.

If your color choices for the four sides are all the same, like mine, you can strip piece them.  Start with 1 1/2 inch strips, one white and one green, that are at least 10 inches long.  Sew the strips together lengthwise; once done your new double-strip will be 2 1/2 inches wide and at least 10 inches long.  From the new double-strip, cut four 2 1/2 inch squares.  These square are for the four sides.

If your color choices for the four sides are not the same, for each side square cut two  2 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch rectangles and sew the rectangles together to create a 2 1/2 inch square.

The four corners are a bit interesting, as the square in the center of each one is set as a diamond.  Start with a 2 inch square, cut four.  Each square has four triangles sewn to the sides.  These triangles are cut from a 1 7/8 square that is cut in half diagonally.  You will need a total of 16 triangles, cut from 8 squares; for my design, I'll need 2 green and 6 blue squares.

Block 98 - Waterwheel

This block is also a 9-patch, four of the blocks are HSTs and five of them are 4-patch blocks.

The HSTs should be easy by now! You'll make four, two that are blue/white and two that are green/white.  Start with 2 7/8 inch squares and use the tutorial we've been using all along.

The 4-patch blocks could be made using strip piecing, but there may not be enough of the same color combos to make it worthwhile.  I'm going to just cut a bunch of 1 1/2 inch squares and piece them together.  Since you'll need to make five blocks, you'll need 20 of these little squares.  If you are using a similar color layout as mine, here are the numbers:
  • 4 blue squares
  • 4 green squares
  • 4 yellow squares
  • 8 white squares
