Farmer's Wife - Week 6

Week 6 of our Farmer's Wife Quilt Along introduces three more blocks that involve a small amount of foundation paper piecing and the rest efficient standard piecing.  This week's blocks are:
  • Block 67, Pine Tree
  • Block 32, Farmer's Daughter
  • Block 61, Northern Lights

Block 67, Pine Tree

I have created a foundation template here for the larger block section you'll see.  Included on the page is a diagram of how the remaining one inch squares should be assembled.  You'll need to create 18 one inch (finished) HSTs using the tutorial we've been using here.  Start with nine 2 inch squares in one color (green) and nine 2 inch squares in the other color (white) to make the 18 HSTs; trim them to 1 1/2 inch squares.  You will also need two 1 1/2 inch squares for those two barely noticeable solid squares in the corner.

Once you have completed the foundation pieced larger block, you have all of the parts to assemble the block.  Be careful again about the seam allowances, making sure to keep a scant 1/4 inch so the finished block measures properly.  Also, be careful to double-check your assemly, as these little blocks are oriented very specifically.

REMINDER: Please be sure to print the templates at 100% scale, not "Shrink to Fit", to be sure you get them to the correct size for 6 inch blocks.

Block 32, Farmer's Daughter

I don't think this block requires much instruction; however, the measurements are a bit odd because this is a 5x5 block, so for a 6 inch finished product, each small finished square must be 1 3/16 inches. We are going to start by collecting 25 squares as follows:
  • Make eight HSTs (see tutorial above) - start with 2 1/4 inch blocks, four of each color (white and green).  Trim them to 1 11/16 inches square.
  • Cut eight 1 11/16 inch squares in the outer color (white)
  • Cut four 1 11/16 inch squares in the HST color (green)
  • Cut four 1 11/16 inch squares for the center cross (blue)
  • Cut one 1 11/16 inch square for the center (red)
NOTE: It wouldn't be unreasonable to trim your squares to 1 3/4 inch, then sew them together carefully, measuring as you do to be sure that you don't end up with a block that is too large.  We wouldn't want to have those triangle points cut off once the block is assembled into the quilt!

Block 61, Northern Lights

This is definitely the simplest block of the week.  If you look back to Week 4, you'll see that this is very similar to Autumn Tints with the addition of HSTs in place of the large 3 inch blocks.

To start, you will need to cut the following squares:

  • One 4 inch square in green and one 4 inch square in yellow.
  • Four 2 inch squares in green
  • Four 2 inch squares in yellow
Assemble the 4 inch squares into the two 3 inch HSTs using the tutorial above.  Assemble the 2 inch squares into four-patch squares (2 green, 2 yellow) two times.  Then assemble the final block with the colors arranged properly.

I'm not wild about this color selection, so I'll probably change it up for my block.
