I decided a sheath dress would be a good start, and if I found a good pattern or two, this is a good basic pattern to have available with a wide variety of options. I went with a nice denim that has a little stretch, just in case the fit was a little off, a medium to heavy weight fabric with a nice hand. I went with a pattern that offers a lot of fitting options, Simplicity 8258, from the Amazing Fit Collection.

Due to the pandemic, I haven't had the chance to wear it anywhere, except to hang out at home after taking the picture below.
Here's the finished product. I ended up making a size 12 and had a few minor adjustments, but could have gone with a size 10 (I wear size 4/6 or small off the rack) due to the stretch in the fabric.

I added some fun fabrics for the neck and arm facings, as well as the pockets. For the most part, nobody will see these, but I know its there. I also didn't want to use the heavier denim for these parts since that would add bulk; these are quilting cottons, so a good match for the denim.
Another adjustment I made was to not have a center seam down the front. I'm not sure why they chose to put a seam there, as it is completely straight. For me it was completely unnecessary, and I'm happier without it.

This will be a good pattern for a variety of options because I can make the dress without the pockets for a dressier look. I could see myself making this pattern with the long sleeves if they are sheer or lace.
Finally, the bust darts are somewhat unusual and I believe might create problems with a print, so I'll likely stick with solids or near solids with this pattern.
