Painting Pottery

Over the holiday break, I had the pleasure of spending a little time with my grown children painting pottery.  A week later, thinking of it as "running an errand", I picked them up and have enjoyed looking at them before they get dispersed to their owners.

We have a shop called "All Fired Up" in our town where you pick out a pre-made pottery item, paint it and return the next week to pick up the completed piece.  They have a wide array of paints, idea books, stencils, etc. and are very good with instructions and help.  One thing they have that other shops I've been to did not have are paint pens, which make fine detail easier to accomplish.

Samantha decided to paint a medium sized bowl for holding fruit or mail.  They had a stencil for hexagons arranged like a honeycomb.  Her first thought was to do the entire bowl, but then after doing a small cluster she liked that, so decided to do a more sparse design.  Probably a good idea, as having the entire bowl covered would have taken a long time.

Nick chose a large mug and used masking tape to create the negative stripes.  He used brushes to get the texture on the painted area, then peeled off the tape once it was dry.

I chose what is actually a toothbrush holder, but I'm using it in my sewing/craft room to hold pencils, rulers, and such, that seem to keep getting lost under piles of fabric and paper.

They all turned out real nice and we had a good time with each other while painting.
