Farmer's Wife - Week 18

This week our blocks all use foundation paper piecing, but also with a few simple cut pieces, a few HST's, and an hourglass thrown in just to keep things interesting.
  • Block 8 - Bouquet
  • Block 23 - Country Farm
  • Block 24 - Country Path

Block 8 - Bouquet

The "bouquet" part of this block uses a Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) template found here.  In addition, you'll need to do the following:
  • Make one 1 1/2 inch HST, trimmed to 2 inches square, for the small corner block.
  • Cut two rectangles 5 inches long and 2 inches wide.
  • Cut one triangle that is 3 7/8 inches on the two short sides.  You can use the shape in the template as a guide, but be sure to add the 1/4 inch seam allowances on all three sides.
Once you have completed the FPP sections, sew them together, then add the large triangle piece.  You should now have a 5 inch block (includes 1/4 inch seam allowances).  Attach one of the long rectangles to this block.

Next, sew the HST to one of the other long rectangles, then attach this piece to the main section and you are done.

Block 23 - Country Farm

The outer sections of this block are foundation paper pieced using this template.

The hourglass block in the center should be made from 2 7/8 inch squares cut from two different fabrics.  Cut each square in half diagonally.  You should have two triangles from each fabric that you will assemble into the hourglass block.  Use the template provided on the FPP page as a guide for trimming your hourglass block to the appropriate size (remember to add the 1/4 inch seam allowance).

Sew the smaller FPP sections to opposite sides of the hourglass block, then attach the remaining FPP sections.

Block 24 - Country Path

This template includes five FPP sections for this block.  The template also shows the 12 squares that also make up the block.  Since these squares are set diagonally, the measurement is a bit unusual.  You will want to cut your blocks to 1 9/16, so that when sewn together, they end up being 1 1/16 inches square.

Sew two squares together and attach to the center FPP section, then repeat on the other side of the center FPP section.  Next sew four squares in a strip; and repeat.  Sew these strips to either side of the same center FPP section.

Finally, sew the four remaining FPP sections to each side of the center section.
