Farmer's Wife - Week 16

We are back from vacation, all caught up, and ready for another week of our Farmer's Wife Quilt-Along!  This week we'll be making three more blocks, but these all have something in common.  Each block includes Flying Geese Rectangle blocks.  I posted information on the Flying Geese block here, so read up on that before getting started.

Our blocks this week are:
  • Block 15 - Buzzard's Roost
  • Block 31 - Evening Star
  • Block 87 - Star Gardener

Block 15 - Buzzard's Roost

This block includes some foundation paper piecing and the template can be found here.  The center block is a 3x3 inch square, so you'll need to cut a 3 1/2 inch square.  Above and below the center square are two Flying Geese rectangles that measure 3 inches by 1 1/2 inches, finished (3 1/2 x 2 with seam allowances).  The strips on the side are the foundation pieced sections.

Block 31 - Evening Star

Evening Star is similar to Buzzard's Roost because it has the same sized center block.  It also includes four Flying Geese rectangles the same size as Buzzard's Roost.  If you choose to make these identical, you can try out the "no-waste" method referenced in the tutorial post.  Finally, for the four corners, cut four 2 inch squares.

Block 87 - Star Gardener

This block will be a fun challenge!  Here is the inventory of "parts":
  • Center block - cut a 2 1/2 inch square
  • Make eight 2 inch by 1 inch (finished) Flying Geese rectangles; they will be 2 1/2 by 1 1/2 with seam allowances.
  • Make eight 1 inch HST's; they will be 1 1/2 inch squares with seam allowances. Refer to the tutorial we've been using for HST's here.
  • Cut eight 1 1/2 inch squares (includes seam allowances).
To assemble the parts, I recommend laying them out in the appropriate orientation.  One turned HST will be noticed.  Then, sew the parts together in groups; 2x2 in the corners (there will be four of these) and Flying Geese groups of two (there will be four of these).  Once done, you'll have nine blocks to sew together in rows.
