Farmer's Wife - Week 8

We are falling behind!  But we will catch up, and to help us along I'm only posting instructions for two blocks this week.  One is pretty hard and the other is easy.  This week we'll be making:
  • Block 79, Silver Lane (pretty complicated)
  • Block 97, Waste Not
Let's get started...

Block 79, Silver Lane

This block is both traditionally pieced and foundation pieced.  Print this page for layout and templates.  Be sure to print it at 100% scale for proper sizing.

The small pinwheel block in the center is pieced with four HSTs using our familiar tutorial here.  These will be one inch finished blocks (trimmed to 1 1/2 inches) made from red and white fabric (using colors above); start with 2 inch squares, two white and two red.  Once complete, assemble them into the pinwheel block.  Next you'll need to cut the following pieces:
  • Four rectangles 2 1/2 inches by 1 1/2 inches from green fabric.
  • Four 1 1/2 inch squares from yellow fabric.
Sew the green rectangles to opposite sides of the pinwheel.  Next, sew the yellow squares to either end of the two remaining green rectangles, then sew these sections to either side of the new pinwheel section.  You should now have a completed center block.

Finally, you will make the foundation pieced sections and attached them to the center block, first the shorter sections then the longer sections.

Block 97, Waste Not

This block is much simpler, paper pieced in four sections that are assembled in a 2x2 block.  The templates can be downloaded here. Again, be sure to print it at 100% scale for proper sizing.
